Petrushka is a folk character who became a symbol of the avant-garde of 20th-century Russian ballet.

Its composer, Igor Stravinsky, created a ballet that became a brilliant chapter of the Ballets Russes seasons in Paris. During the performance in Paris, the musicians burst out laughing – so comical did Petrushka's facial expressions seem to them. At the time, no one could have imagined that Petrushka would come to embody an entire century. The vivid colours and panache of the piece have captivated more than one generation of lovers of this kind of performance
